Balmbras 5 Cloth Market, Newcastle |
PUB FACILITIES: ![]() ![]() |
Tel: 0191 2223131 |
A deceivingly small pub from the outside, Balmbra's is actually quite big once inside, although it is quite long and thin (if you know what I mean!) On popular nights, the back bit can get uncomfortably busy and getting served at that bar can take ages, but the front section near the window is usually quite well spaced out. Drinks can be cheap if you get there at the right time, and there's a DJ in the back which can turn the place almost into a mini-club. A good typical Bigg Market pub. |

Berties Bar Arcade Front Street, Tynemouth, North Tyneside |

An absolute star of a pub in an age when they all look the same, Berties Bar is mainly for the locals but is very friendly so I'd reccommend a visit. The walls are decked out with as much Newcastle United memorabilia as you could imagine, and there are loads of pictures from days gone by. Satelite football is beamed in to televisions located all around the bar and there are usually some special offers on the drinks. If your in Tynemouth, pop in for a swift pint and enjoy something a little bit different. |

Not the easiest place in the world to find, The Brandling is one of the more popular pubs in Jesmond, being appreciated by both students and locals alike. The pub is split into two halves, although they kind of run into each other, with one bit being classed as a restaurant and having massive wooden tables. There's a massive screen on the back wall showing live football and other sport, while you can also have amuse yourself on the pool table (get your 50p's down quickly though!). The Brandling apparantly does some of the best pizza in Jesmond, although I have yet to sample this claim for myself! |

The Carriage is actually what used to be the old Jesmond Railway Station, and has been tastefully restored into a nice little pub. It is in quite a quiet part of town so is ideal if you are looking for a relaxing drink without the hustle and bustle of the nearby City Centre. There is a small beer garden outside, and food is served. Adjoining the pub is an Indian Restaurant which is very highly rated I believe, although not owned by the pub. |

Centurian Bar Cafe Central Station, Newcastle |

This end of Central Station has stood disused since the 1960s, but a multi-million pound refurbishment last year saw everything restored to its former glory and the Centurian Bar Cafe opened. The actual bar area here is tiny and only has a few tables, but there is also a large restaurant with covered patio area, and an internet cafe! The pub bit itself also has a couple of internet ready terminals which you can browse on until your hearts content while you wait for a train. The best bits of the Centurian include the ornate styling of the roof, and also the monitors above the bar which are linked to a webcam pointing straight at the departures board out in the station! Useful to see if your train is late leaving you time for another pint. |

The Chain Locker 50 Duke Street, New Quay, North Shields, North Tyneside |

Tel: 0191 2580147 |
From the outside, a contender for the Smallest Pub Ever award, but inside, it stretches back quite a way and has a pool table to while away the minutes while waiting for the ferry to South Shields. You can leave here only 90 seconds before the ferry stops boarding and still catch it, which is good if you like to savour your beer, but bad if the ferry leaves early. Anyway, there's usually a friendly crowd in here so its worth stopping at if you have a few minutes to kill. |

Chase 10 - 15 Sandhill, Quayside, Newcastle |
PUB FACILITIES: ![]() |
Tel: 0191 2450055 |
Without a doubt THE place to be seen on the Quayside. Or at least it was until everyone started going! Get here early if you want to walk right in, or expect to queue for at least fifteen minutes if you arrive any time after 8pm. Once you're inside, though, the place is deceptively spacious and boasts another couples of floors upstairs, with the bar spiralling up next to the punters. Drinks prices can generally be classed as "high", but the same can be said of the quality of women! Mind the bouncers on the doors, as if you are even remotely drunk, you'll probably not get in. |

Circus Circus 31 - 33 Mosley Street, Newcastle |

Tel: 0191 2320747 |
Right at the bottom of the Bigg Market lies Circus Circus in what should be a prime location, but I reckon this place could do with a refurb. Some nice touches are the dodgem cars set above the bar and the general funfair theme, but the last three times we have been here, I honestly can't describe the bar as being packed. If you are underage, you should probably get in here no problem at all, for the rest of us, head across the road to Bar M. |

The Corner House High Heaton, Newcastle |

The Corner House is another Barras pub - part of a chain which I consider of a high quality. The pub is really big inside but has a lot of small rooms and alcoves so you can always find peace to talk if you want, and the music when played isn't too loud. There's a function room at the back which is frequently used to showcase local new bands, and a small hotel adjoins with reasonably priced rooms if you're stopping over. A very enjoyable pub, with easy road access, although perhaps a little remote if on foot. |

Flares Newcastle City Centre |

Newcastle has something for everyone, and if the 70s is your thing, Flares is the place to head for! As soon as you go in, you are confronted with TV screens showing cartoons from that era, bar staff wearing groovy clothes and all that music you loved being pumped out to an appreciative crowd. There's a dancefloor at the back and many of the punters turn up in 70s attire which really adds to the atmosphere, which is great. There's a broad age range of people inside and drinks are often on promotion. Through the day, when it's quieter, there's a pool table and you can sit and talk. |

Fleet Street Newcastle City Centre |

For years the watering hole of workers from the adjacent newspaper offices (hence the name), Fleet Street is a really nice little pub, despite looking slightly run-down from the outside. The bar is pretty small but when we visited on a busy Friday night, there were so many bar staff on working so efficiently that we got served straight away. And I mean they were really working flat out here, not pausing between customers, poor things! Fleet Street is just off the Bigg Market but seems to miss out on that crazed revellery that is obvious in the many bars just up the road, possibly due to the slightly older customer base. Nice range of drinks, and cheap doubles certainly go down well. |

Flynns 63 Quayside, Newcastle |
PUB FACILITIES: ![]() |
Tel: 0191 2327218 |
One of our regular meeting points, Flynns can be cheap early on, but always seems ridiculously expensive later! The pub is on about 4 floors, all of which are absolutely tiny, so the place looks very packed early on even if there might not be too many people around. There's a DJ on some nights and usually a good selection of cocktails and drinks for sale so a pretty good atmosphere although I feel the music can be too loud sometimes. Flynns is easy to find on the Quayside - go under the Tyne Bridge towards the Law Courts and its on your left hand side. |

Right next to Greys Monument in the heart of Newcastle, you have to climb about 10 flights of stairs to get to this upstairs bar, but there's also a lift available if your in a wheelchair, or simply too drunk! There's loads of music and radio related stuff on the walls of FM's, as the pub is connected to the local radio station Metro FM, and although quite small, there's a good atmosphere here. There are usually some special drinks offers on, and a DJ provides plenty of music and chat. A good pre-club stopping off point. |

The Fog and Firkin Sandgate, The Quayside, Newcastle |
PUB FACILITIES: ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Tel: 0191 2618272 |
A good pub if your looking for somewhere quiet to go, but there are better Firkins around if thats your thing. Right out past everything else on the Quayside, the pub remains pretty quiet even on a Friday night although this can be a good thing if you want to escape the crush of most other places. Food is served, including pizza, and there's a pool table and all the usual Firkin pub games for you to while away an evening. Popular with students. |
